FISHING REPORT JUNE 19TH, 2009
This week in the East Cape, the fishing seems to have slowed down just a bit. We are still seeing lots of Marlin, but the numbers on the other species have fallen of just a bit. The good news is that the fish that are coming in are big. One guest landed 5 dorado and released another 5. The 5 that came to the dock were all over 43lbs. Most of the good fishing this week was to the north of Palmas De Cortez, where guests found some nice dorado, roosters, cabrilla, and even a few sierra. The one specie that is in full swing are the billfish. One guest went for the grand slam (Stripe Marlin, Sail Fish, and Blue Marlin) in one day, but fell short when his blue marlin broke off after only a one minute fight. Like I’ve said in the past, even a bad day in Baja is a great day in most other places. My guess is that the fishing slowed a bit this week because of the tropical depression which formed to the south of cabo and will be making land fall on the mainland side on Saturday. The fishing should pick back up next week. I’ll keep you posted.
Mike Rieser – Baja Flyfishing Co.
Hola Amigos,
This fishing season is reaching a state of maturity as indicated by the first Tropical Depression forming to the south of us. The predicted landfall is the coats of Sinaloa. A southerly swell is breaking on the beach as I write this, thunder heads rim the southern sky and rain is in the air. Rain is life in the desert and the People of the Baja welcome the chubasco season as a harbinger of rain.
Our fly fishing clients landed some dorado early in the week, with the numbers dropping in the last few days. John hosted a crew from Screaming Trout Productions filming a Chasing Tail Series. While here they filmed dorado, rooster and billfish on the fly. No lizard fish were caught however, a disappointment for John. Two other billfish were hung on the fly, but rather skillfully avoided capture. They are like that.
The roosterfish are here, some large among the schools. The catching, as always, with roosters has been challenging. Mike Coughlin and Andy Kimbrel had one good day with several gallos around 12 pounds. The beach is producing a few roosters with lots of larger fish cruising the first wave trough.
The weather has turned humid with the proximity of the tropical low with temperatures around 86 to 88 during the day. The nights are still very comfortable. A southeast wind picked up in the afternoon towards the end of the week. The water is a very warm 83 to 85 according to Terra Fin and my Fish Pond thermometer in the live well. The bait is holding out and we have had plenty of Sardina and mullet to tease with.
That’s our report for the week. Hopefully we will see you soon down our way.
The Sea of Cortez, one of the world's most rich and diverse marine environments, is one of the few locales that yield marlin year-round. Besides being a prime spring spawning area for striped marlin up to 200 pounds, Baja's East Cape is a favored location to achieve bill fishing's Grand Slam, adding blue and black marlin (200-1000 pounds) and Pacific sailfish (80-150 pounds) to the mix.
Catch-and-release is strongly encouraged for all billfish. These apex predators comprise the pinnacle of a fragile marine eco-system. Conversely, plentiful species like tuna and dorado (mahi-mahi) reproduce in the millions and make excellent table fare. These pelagic (open ocean) species roam the 1500-7500-foot depths close to shore here. Numerous inshore species add to the incredible variety of marine life in the Sea of Cortez.
The resorts provide fillet and freezer services, and a smokehouse is available. Your fishing manager will coordinate your charter, arrange lunches and beverages, assist you at dockside, and process your catch.
Our fleet, the East Cape's largest and newest, comes fully equipped with all rods, reels, tackle, and our professional captains enjoy teaching beginner and novice saltwater anglers. Angling presentations include live bait (available daily from bait skiffs), trolled lures, and fly-casting.
Fishing at Van Wormer Resorts is world renowned as one of the best values in saltwater sport fishing today.
